DfV Thinks: What is flattening the curve?

There have been so many new phrases that we've heard adults using lately, especially when it comes to COVID-19. One of those phases is "flattening the curve." Is there an actual curve, and what happens if we flatten it? How do we flatten the curve? We chatted with Dr. Jennifer Dyer and Nicole Dempster, PhD of Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, OH. They had answers to all of our questions.


When people talk about flattening the curve, they talking about the number of people who will get sick from COVID-19. If we all go outside and risk contracting the virus, there could be A LOT of people who get sick.


Think of the number of people who will get sick as if it were a hill ⛰. The more people who are outside without masks, who don't wash their hands properly, the higher the hill will become. When we all take the proper steps to stop the virus in its tracks, we can all make the hill a lot smaller.


This is why it's so important to practice the everyday steps like washing your hands and physical distancing. The fewer people who are exposed to the virus, the flatter the curve will be helping everyone stay as safe as possible.


What else can we do to help?

We can all help protect older people, and people who have weakened immune systems who may be more likely to get sick from COVID-19.

  • Follow the advice of your physician and local governments in staying safe at home.

  • Wash your hands often for at least 20 seconds (you can even sing songs to make it more fun!).


You may not feel sick, and you or your friends and families may not seem sick, but sneaky coronavirus likes to hang out with you before you even know its there! You can outsmart the virus by following these guidelines.
